The FreeSchools Model is unique and cost-effective. It is school on a shoestring.
• tteach only students without access to education
• tlocate schools where the need is greatest
• tuse mainly donated space
• tfocus resources on teacher training and salaries
• thold classes in early evening to avoid conflicts with other responsibilities
• trecruit mainly female teachers from the same villages as the children
• tprovide ongoing teacher training and supervision
• tensure respect for all religions with no proselytizing
• tgive girls priority but not exclusivity
• tprovide a quality primary curriculum
• tprovide HIV/AIDS and human trafficking awareness
• tencourage students to continue education in government schools
• tprovide modest scholarships for exceptional students
• provide learning materials, snacks, clothing and transportation when needed
Some adaptations are made. For example, in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh we offer a full primary curriculum but in Thailand we teach only Thai language skills (Hill tribes have their own language) and mathematics, enough to equip students to be successful in government schools. In Thailand and Bihar we borrow existing space in which to hold classes, but in Uttar Pradesh we rent shelters as the parched land is devoid of trees and shade is at a premium.
How We Measure Success
Rigorous records are kept by teachers to track student progress. The following are indicators of success:
• tolder children volunteer to teach the younger ones
• tcultural programs are created to showcase natural talents
• tstudents enroll in government schools for higher learning
• tformer students become FreeSchools teachers
• texploitation and human trafficking is reduced
• tparents show support by getting involved
• tparents want education for themselves
• tvillagers build a dedicated FreeSchool
• tdemand for a FreeSchool spreads to other villages
