We believe all children ought to be equipped with sufficient education to combat hunger, poverty, disease, exploitation and despair. In our experience, we see that literacy can be systematically established at the grassroots using our simple cost-effective FreeSchools model. FreeSchools World Literacy does not build schools but rather invests mainly in excellent teachers and learning materials. We see that this modest and carefully administered investment stimulates initiative and self-reliance on the part of parents and village leaders, many of whom have donated land, building materials and labour to house the FreeSchool class. Like the successful micro-lending model (which lends poor people small amounts of money to start a business), we believe that FreeSchools has the potential to take root in many illiterate and impoverished villages across India and beyond. We offer just enough to fund the basics of literacy and let the community take ownership of the ensuing school culture. We don’t impose Western values or conditions and allow schools to progress at their own evolutionary pace.
